Up and running again!
Windows has given me nothing but grief. Besides eating tons of data and applications in two major crashes this past year, last month it ate my old blog.
This is the beginning of a new one, and I’ll just start with a picture of what I’ll be leaving on Thursday, shot from in front of Joe’s place:
Right click then select “view image” to see a larger version of images and if there’s a magnifier, use it to see them full-sized. Use the browser Back button to return.

And I won’t have the nifty old GMC van, but will instead be riding in a soccer-mom-type minivan. Here it is in front of my house [which survived a year's lease to four college students in terrific shape, probably because they're all girls :-)]

Should be fine. Has a new bike rack

and room for a sleeping bag.

And my ride buddy seems to rarin’ to go.

First stop is Denver, for dinner with niece Cyrina (who has floor space for my sleeping bag) and nephew Jason (who’s driving in from Boulder). Should be fun – I’m rarin’ to go, too :-)
PS: At some point I may at least re-post the pictures and videos from my last blog – hate to not have any record.
Good to see the blog up and running again. Van looks great, easier to manage and probably better mileage. Hope the weather here is as nice as it looks at Joes. Looking forward to your posts along the way.
Jeff
A little more streamlined than the last ride, but looks like you’ve got a great set up! Are you taking Hopper with you on this trip, too?
ah nice, the minivan has lots of room! bummer about the loss of the first blog, ach…
happy travels uncle!
The main criterion for van selection was that I be able to stretch out and this one passed.
Another great thing about it is that I’ll be able to park inside parking structures. The other van spent 6 months sitting in salt spray just yards from the ocean and that didn’t do the fitting much good.
Anyhow, the pulse is starting to pick up speed as I think about road tripping again … feels way cool :-)
It’ll be fun following you on your way back East. Did you manage to see any of the Diners,Drive Ins and Dives shows for food stops along your way?
Excellent! New trip……new blog. Look forward to your next journey.
Bjarne and I are up to our eyeballs in renovating and picking out things like latches, doors, windows and width of stair tread (so people like us with large feet don’t have to walk down sideways). So far, so good…but it is boggling how many decisions there are (on things we know little about). I know you and Joe are whizzes at this kind of thing.
What is scheduled departure date? And where are you going?
Cheers from very sunny (for now) Victoria.
I’m out of here on Thursday morning, arriving in Denver on Friday for dinner with a niece and nephew.
From there I head out to camp out with Nicole and Jeff for about 5 weeks. I really like Chicago in the summer. We’ve booked several concerts-on-the-grass with George Thorogood, Elvis Costello, Taj Mahal and others. Spaces will be filled with a variety of festivals, including “Taste of Polonia” where I understand I’ll get my fill of perogis and similar stuff, Ribs ‘n’ Soul and others.
From there, will slowly meander back to Miami Beach. May camp out at Harper’s Ferry, will definitely visit friends in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Road tripping still feels way cool :-)
(Hi to Bjarne.)
Summer has been taken up by two anniversaries, Jim (brother) and Marie’s 25th, J & H Ulan’s 50th, two funerals (you may remember Ben Mandrusiak, Marika’s son),family birthdays galore–so we had one big family picnic which was enjoyed by all with more still to come. As a result we had little time at the cottage. JL spent a week in Washington DC–no iced tea with Michelle. New wheels look real cool–should you need an extension for your sleeping bag a set of tandem wheels will do the trick. Enjoy your road tripping. Betty & jl
Thanks,B & L. Once I get an address, you’re invited to visit – I’ll let you know.
